History of the Library
In June of 1825 Troy citizens formed the Troy Library Association and incorporated a share-supported library of about 180 volumes. The books were kept in Lyman Wright’s store and in other stores until 1882 when a community supported public library was established and housed in town hall.
In 1927 Edwin Gay gave a parcel of land to the town as a site for a library. In 1945 a $12,000 bequest from the estate of Warren Kimball provided the necessary funding for the building. The library was named the Gay-Kimball Library in their honor.
At the instigation of Margaret Cumings the original red-brick building was erected in 1954. A beautiful new addition was finished in May 1999 with the support of the entire town and many generous donors. It added 2,653 additional sq. ft. and renovated 2,621 sq. ft. Today the library houses over 22,000 titles including DVDs and audio books, has 2 public access computers, a state of the art automation system and a lovely community meeting room.
